A Brief Look at World War II - 1521 Words
World War II World War II was the largest war and the bloodiest war that the U.S. has ever been involved in. Forty to Fifty million people lost their lives during World War II. This was a war that lasted for about six years and involved countries from around the whole world. The axis powers in the war consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan. The Allie powers consisted of the United States, France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and to a lesser extent, China. It is said that unsettled disputes from the first world war, World War I, is what was the main cause of WWII. Japan trained men for the war starting at the age of nine years old. It is said that of all the Soviet men that were born in the year 1923, only twenty percent survived the war. This means eighty percent of all males died in the war. Thatââ¬â¢s from one country, imagine how many innocent lives were taken during the war. All because of one man, Adolf Hitler. The war stemmed off in early 1939 when German dictator Adolf Hitler had intentions of invading Poland. Poland knew about this, so they went to France and Britain for an alliance should Germany invade them. When Germany heard about this, they decided it would be good to take out the Soviets because they didnââ¬â¢t know if they would fight on Polandââ¬â¢s side or not. On August 23, 1939, Germany and the Soviets signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression pact. This stated that once Poland was taken over, the country would be divided evenly between the two power countries.Show MoreRelatedA Brief Look at World War II686 Words à |à 3 PagesWorld War II, or the Second World War, was one of the biggest wars because it was international. Hydrolic Fracking Research Paper - 1784 Words
Hydraulic fracturing is a process used in nine out of 10 natural gas wells in the United States, where millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals are pumped underground to break apart the rock and release the gas. Scientists are worried that the chemicals used in fracturing may pose a threat either underground or when waste fluids are handled and sometimes spilled on the surface. The natural gas industry defends hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking, as safe and efficient. Thomas J. Pyle, president of the Institute for Energy Research, a pro-industry non-profit organization, claims fracking has been ââ¬Å"a widely deployed as safe extraction technique,â⬠dating back to 1949. What he doesnââ¬â¢t say is that until recently energyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In its citation to Carizzo Oil and Gas, the DEP strongly recommended that the company cease drilling at all 67 wells ââ¬Å"until the cause of this problem and a solution are identified.â⬠In December 2011, the federal Environmental Protection Agency concluded that fracking operations could be responsible for groundwater pollution.ââ¬Å"Todayââ¬â¢s methods make gas drilling a filthy business. You know itââ¬â¢s bad when nearby residents can light the water coming out of their tap on fire,â⬠says Larry Schweiger, president of the National Wildlife Federation. Whatââ¬â¢s causing the fire is the methane from the drilling operations. A ProPublica investigation in 2009 revealed methane contamination was widespread in drinking water in areas around fracking operations in Colorado, Texas, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania. The presence of methane in drinking water in Dimock, Pa., had become the focal point for Josh Foxââ¬â¢s investigative documentary, Gasland, which received an Academy Award nomination in 2011 for Outstanding Documentary; Fox also received an Emmy for non-fiction directing. Foxââ¬â¢s interest in fracking intensified when a natural gas company offe red $100,000 for mineral rights on property his family owned in Milanville, in the extreme northeast part of Pennsylvania, about 60 miles east of Dimock. Electric Utilities And Deregulation free essay sample
Examines the background of public utilities regulation, legal limits on government, court cases, effects of deregulation on industry and consumers. DEREGULATION OF THE ELECTRIC UTILITY INDUSTRY This research paper discusses various legal aspects of the deregulation of the electric power industry in the United States, especially the legal constraints on the power of government, state and federal, to regulate the industry and the rights of the electric utilities (EUs) to recover through the public rate-making process costs and commitments undertaken by them before deregulation becomes fully effective. Generally, the regulatory power of state governments stems from their police powers to regulate an industry which affects the public interest. Constitutional limitations on that power under the Fifth Amendment and the Contract Clause are relatively weak: however, the industry can be expected to use its considerable leverage with state public utility commissions (PUCs) to work out

my little brother free essay sample
When my younger brother, Ibrahim, was a toddler, he used to call me dad (instead of Eyad) and we used to laugh about it. But as we grew up, 7 years apart, this joke started to become a reality. Ibrahim copied me in every possible way, and has an unshakable faith in me. For the longest time I considered him my best friend. I took care of him, taught him, and confided in him. I care about him so much that I donââ¬â¢t want to disappoint him. I know he is watching my every move, so I am watching my every move. I know he is copying every word I say, so I am careful with what I say. If I ignore my work, he ignores his and if I cut corners, he follows suit. I want to be proud of him so I need to be proud of me. Last summer, I asked my father if I could help around the office. We will write a custom essay sample on my little brother or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He said he has ââ¬Å"a projectâ⬠for me. I had to scan some 1000 old charts into the new electronic system. What was supposed to be a simple job turned out to be so intense, I was 110 percent consumed by the process. The computer would randomly freeze and the scanner would arbitrarily jam. I had to repeat scanning some sections several times. By the end of the first day, my back was frozen like an old tree, my eyes were burning like someone poured acid in them and my head was about to explode. No matter how hard I worked, I could not finish more than 10 charts per day. This meant I may just finish on the last day of summer. I could not believe that I was going to spend every day of the summer like this. ââ¬Å" Dad, do we have to scan everything?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, everything.â⬠But some papers were literally empty. Some were almost blank with ââ¬Å"NO SHOWâ⬠across the page. Some were Medication Lists and no medication listed. After one week of this never ending p ain, I decided that I needed to do something to become more efficient. I started to disregard the pages that are ââ¬Å"not importantâ⬠. Things moved faster and I could finish almost twenty charts per day. I could take a deep breath now, knowing that I would finish few weeks before the school starts again. One month now has passed and I am half way done. One day my dad was helping me clean up when he noticed that some papers were not scanned. ââ¬Å"Why these documents are not scanned Eyad?â⬠I could never lie to my father. ââ¬Å"They are empty.â⬠ââ¬Å"What? Why? Who told you that? Eyad, these are legal documents. Every piece of paper is a legal document.â⬠my father was now screaming. He asked how many charts I did not properly scan, and I told him that I did not know. There was no way to know which one I scanned and which one I did not. Now my father was holding his head as if he were going to pass out. ââ¬Å"Who told you to think? All you had to do is t o scan.â⬠I was dizzy. I could not hear or think any more. I knew how disappointed he was and I knew I had no defense. I wished I never accepted to scan in the first place. We got home and he told the whole family what I did. All I could hear is people repeating: Oh my God, oh my God. I rushed to my room, weeping. No one wanted to understand how difficult scanning was. No one wanted to listen. I was never going back to the office again. Ibrahim, came to the room and sat silently across from me. He was sad, and deeply disappointed. I explained to him what happened. He listened patiently, then he said at the end: ââ¬Å"How can you fix it?ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t, no one can.â⬠ââ¬Å" So what are we going to do?â⬠ââ¬Å" I donââ¬â¢t know. He needs to get someone else. He needs to hire someone elseâ⬠. He looked at me and screamed, in his scratchy voice: ââ¬Å"But if you canââ¬â¢t do it, no one else canâ⬠it took me a while to understand. Ibrahim does not only think that I am as good as everyone else, he thinks that I am better than everyone else. ââ¬Å"If I canââ¬â¢t do it, no one else canâ⬠. The last thing I want is to disappoint these incent eyes. I donââ¬â¢t know how I slept that night. It was the most dramatic day in my life. The next morning, I got up early and was dressed and waiting in the family room before my father got up. ââ¬Å"Where are you going?â⬠My father asked. ââ¬Å"What else are you going to do?â⬠I knew what he meant, but I replied assertively: ââ¬Å"I am going to fix it.â⬠I could see a glimpse of satisfaction going through his mind. We talked no more. I got to the office and erased all the files I created and started scanning all over again, working diligently, carefully and silently. By the end of summer, I was only half done with the charts, but whatever I scanned this time, was perfect. I felt a great deal of satisfaction and accomplishment, and my whole family was p roud of me. Now every time I feel down I will remember: ââ¬Å"if you canââ¬â¢t do it, no one else canâ⬠. I have big dreams in this life. My father will always be my guiding star. I will do my best to please him. But no matter what happens, I know I could never disappoint my little brother.

Essay Sample on Playground My Point of View
Essay Sample on Playground My Point of View ââ¬Å"The playgroundâ⬠The smiling grass gives the impression of a healthy feeding by animals. The shining star from the East gives a sparkling outlook on the court giving the best of all Mother Nature can offer. The greenly parchments on the playground are a mouth-watering sight with kids displaying their skills in football and basketball. The movement of their feet resembling hockey sticks entails the search for happiness, compassion and togetherness by the kids. The running ball is all they want; the skinny ones are the fastest while the elephants bulldoze their tusks, as they chase the football. The shouting increases as the ball rolls to the east side chased by the impala fast handsome kid towards the trembling lily between the thin, tall gaping goal posts. A thunderous shot leaves a shaking net in its wake. Shouts of joy and jubilation fill the air. ââ¬Å"Tap, tap, tapâ⬠as they move outdoing each other and ââ¬Å"yeeeeeesâ⬠the dunk is in. Ooh, my God, the goalkeeper laments, the worst happens and is thinking of the career ahead of him. Clutching dipped heads in a line the movements certainly homebound. For today, that is, all they got and the pain of losing engraved in their minds as they depart. The grass in an illusion of their former self a re tired and sleepy; how good would the healing waters flow to drawn the sorrows of the day. Clicking cameras, their invention a big blunder, claim their stake in this piece of history. What an uncontrollable environment that has turned a field to a pool of emotional kids.

Apple Computers Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Apple Computers - Essay Example Yet, as we look forward to a happy ending, earnings taper off and it appears as though the saga may be over after all. However, a feeling of quiet confidence gradually takes over the observer, as both Apple Computers and Jobs negotiate through each downturn with aplomb. Must a company's journey through time be so turbulent This document tries to draw lessons from the Apple experience and to suggest stable ways for commercial firms to manage their planning and operational processes. There are two over reaching factors that seem to have influenced strategic change at Apple Computers. The first is the frenetic pace of technological change. No other industrial sector has witnessed the continuous and rapid improvements in processor speeds, storage capacity, transmission options and software development. This has been a source of strength and an opportunity for the entrepreneurial culture of Apple Computers, but it has proved to be a handful for people such as Sculley who labored so hard to bring a semblance of order and discipline to the highly individualistic style of functioning to which die-hard company employees have become accustomed. A second factor which has affected strategy in this company has been the tumultuous and disorderly change of guard at the top. There is no precedent for such a striking founder to leave his creation while remaining in the business. Even more unusual has been the return of Jobs as a mere consultant to the company which he once owned. These moves, and indeed the manner of Sculley's departure have posed special challenges for the company. Strategy Review Systematic and regular environmental scanning seems to be a lacuna in the planning process at Apple Computers. Every enterprise needs a deep understanding of the values that its products and services deliver in an environment of global competitiveness (Ohmae, 1991, 61-74). The success of Jobs to see the opportunity in the graphic user interface which Xerox apparently missed, did not repeat itself when the company invested resources in Newton. It leads one to suspect that iPod may have come about by chance more than by a designed set of steps to understand dynamic customer needs. Environment scanning is an important and integral part of formulating strategy. We do not know if Apple Computers made the effort to reach out across the world, as for example IBM has always done, to weave market realism and new trends in consumer needs in to they way it thinks and works as an organization. The genius of Jobs could have been a drag for the company he founded, for he is clearly a person who th inks way ahead of his time. The story of Apple's strategy could be seen in the light of essential differences between a University Research Department and the function in a pharmaceutical concern which creates solely for profit. Jobs seems to have erred in mixing business and more visionary roles in a manner that continued to haunt the company long after he had left. We do know from the case that Sculley tried hard to rectify matters, but perhaps his 'sugary water' background prevented him from managing the environmental scanning process with the technological orientation it deserved. This is reflected in IBM and even prime rival Microsoft making good business use of some key Apple innovations! Overall, every business needs sound and
